Dog Repellent

Xavier Strickland
4-years old | Detroit, Michigan

Xavier Strickland, 4-years old, was murdered by four pit bulls as he walked down a residential sidewalk with his mother. The two were walking near Baylis Street when multiple pit bulls escaped under their owner's gate, snatched the boy from his mother's arms, dragged him across the street then yanked him back under the gate and disemboweled him. His mother witnessed his brutal murder and was also severely injured by one of the dogs while trying to protect her son. A responding police officer open fired, killing three of the pit bulls. The fourth was confiscated and later destroyed. The dogs had a history of escaping their owner's property. Xavier's death caused an outcry in Detroit -- dogfighting, pit bulls, the incessant backyard breeding of pit bulls and stray pit bulls are all part of the city's fabric. Five days after his death, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged the dogs' owner, Geneke Antonio Lyons, 41, with second-degree murder, manslaughter and possessing dangerous animals causing death

Columbia, MS Tanya Barnes

In what can only be described as "deplorable" victim exploitation, Tanya Barnes signed a release Tuesday allowing both pit bulls to be returned to their owner. Earlier in April, Barnes was violently bitten in the face by a female pit bull after a male pit bull stepped on a puppy causing it to bark. Instead of attacking the male dog, the female clamped onto Barnes' face causing life-altering injury and the likelihood that Barnes will be forced into bankruptcy."This is not okay," she said referring to her injuries. "Somebody needs to be responsible for this."Barnes has had two surgeries so far and will likely need several more. Barnes could not afford the COBRA insurance co-payments after the death of her husband. She currently has no insurance. She does not know how she and her children will get through this. "I want my kids to go to school. I want them to have a future. We don't have money socked back in an account somewhere. This is taking our light bill money to get prescriptions filled when we get out of here

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich.

- An 89-year-old woman was attacked and her dog was killed Monday afternoon by a German shepherd while out for a walk in Farmington Hills. “I told Dolly, I said, ‘we’re going to go for a little walk, and then we’re going to have our lunch and you get a cookie and then we’ll take a nap,” Marie Clark said. The walk is as far into the afternoon that Dolly made it. A German shepherd jumped from a truck and attacked them both. “I was screaming and crying and hollering for help,” Clark said. Clark got Dolly after her husband passed away. A painter from Harrison Township was working on the condo across the street from Clark and brought his German shepherd with him, leaving the dog alone for hours in the truck while he worked. The window was down and the dog got out. “I could hear him eating up my dog,” Clark said. “There was nothing I could do because that dog was too big.” Animal control was unable to remove the dog because the man isn’t from Farmington Hills. If the man had been from Farmington Hills, police said they would have labeled the dog a vicious animal and forced the man to have a $1,000,000 insurance policy.
