The two were walking near Baylis Street when multiple pit bulls escaped under their owner's gate, snatched the boy from his mother's arms, dragged him across the street then yanked him back under the gate and disemboweled him. His mother witnessed his brutal murder and was also severely injured by one of the dogs while trying to protect her son. A responding police officer open fired, killing three of the pit bulls. The fourth was confiscated and later destroyed. The dogs had a history of escaping their owner's property. Xavier's death caused an outcry in Detroit -- dogfighting, pit bulls, the incessant backyard breeding of pit bulls and stray pit bulls are all part of the city's fabric. Earlier in April, Barnes was violently bitten in the face by a female pit bull after a male pit bull stepped on a puppy causing it to bark. Instead of attacking the male dog, the female clamped onto Barnes' face causing life-altering injury and the likelihood that Barnes will be forced into bankruptcy."This is not okay," she said referring to her injuries. "Somebody needs to be responsible for this."Barnes has had two surgeries so far and will likely need several more. Barnes could not afford the COBRA insurance co-payments after the death of her husband. She currently has no insurance. She does not know how she and her children will get through this.
